What does Board Certified mean?

* To receive the designation of “Board Certified” an attorney must meet a rigid set of criteria.
* One must have been licensed for at least five years with three of those years in the specialty in which certification is sought.
* 25 – 50% of the attorney’s practice must be within the specialty.
* The attorney must have handled a wide variety of cases in the field to demonstrate substantial involvement.
* Continuing education in legal seminars is also required.
The two final criteria are:
* The approval of judges and colleagues in the field that the attorney is worthy of certification and
* Passage of a written exam administered by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
